Waikato in action

from Chairwoman, Paula Spiers

Dear Choristers, organists and friends,

Year end rapidly approaches

I find it hard to believe the year is going so quickly and that I am choosing Advent music.

"End of an era"

We were saddened to hear of the death of Rev. Canon Fred Cook. RSCM was well represented at his funeral in Cambridge and we have written to his wife, Nancy, on behalf of RSCM Waikato. He was chairperson of RSCM  for many years and a great supporter of music . He will be missed.

80th

We were delighted to be a part of the celebration of David McAdam's 80th birthday at St. Peter's Cathedral, . Well done! Psalm 80 (paraphrasing) refers to "This vineyard, God hast made strong." and seems a fitting description of the contributions David has made to the RSCM NZ over long years as Waikato Branch treasurer and mentor.

Eight Choirs Festival

Our Choral Festival (September 09) was a great joy to us all. Eight choirs with their accompanists presenting a wide range of music  - including both Cathedral Singers and the choir from Cambridge singing the same setting of the Magnificat! We [CS] thoroughly enjoyed hearing "our" piece interpreted in a slightly different way.  Rachael Griffiths-Hughes conducted the tutti after a too brief rehearsal, leaving us wanting more! Next year we will leave more time for this part of the festival. My thanks to everyone -  organisers, singers, conductors, accompanists and the administrators at St. Peter's -  . A lovely venue for a great afternoon.

"Lend Me Your Ears"

An apt description for a splendid workshop by Coryn Knapper held at St. Paul's, London Street (Hamilton NZ). (Thank you!) This was one of those times you work really hard and love it. Coryn is a superb teacher as well as a singer of note. I trust everyone that attended is doing some of the exercises given that day. A good New Year's Resolution for 2010.

Festive Finale

This month (September 09) we will have our last event for the year, Festive Finale. Do come, bring some music if you wish or come to sing! New repertoire is always needed so this is a welcome opportunity to share with each other. We will have information about RSCM events in 2010 . Bring your diary. As we come to the end of the year  may we all have a blessed Christmas with family and friends, and start the New Year in a positive and happy mind.
