WINTER CHOIR SCHOOL 2009

Monday 6 July to Saturday 11 July

St Matthew’s Collegiate Masterton

What is the RSCM Winter Choir School?

The school is a short residential course for young people and is designed to be musical, social and fun. Singers from all over New Zealand come to work with each other and some of the country’s finest musicians.
The School’s aims are to foster friendship between young people interested in music, to promote an ecumenical approach to music in worship and to produce a Final Service to formally showcase some of the results of the week’s workshops. Each day involves sessions on the music to be presented at the Final Service, rehearsing with the whole school and in smaller groups called ‘houses’. All singers will also take part in Mixed Groups which will allow older singers to mix with and encourage younger singers, and be mentors. Each day will begin with a whole-school warm-up and end with a service lead by one of the houses.
Music will be carefully chosen to suit the strengths, numbers and range of singers attending the school, with a strong music and spiritual educational component. The School makes several awards for excellence and leadership at the end of the week, with two cups available for juniors and the Byrd House Awards (formerly the Yellow Ribbon) available for seniors.
Scholarships for future Choir Schools are also available under various criteria. More information on School awards and scholarships will be given to students during the week. As well as all the music, there is free time every day. The school has extensive grounds to explore. Many singers take advantage of the free time to work on an item for the School’s in-house concert, where they can show off talents other than singing! There will also be daily workshops and instruction given in caring for the voice, technique and learning to sing various styles. And, of course, there is plenty of time for just good fun!

Details for the Winter Choir School 2009

Starting and finishing:
The course begins with registrations from 2pm on Monday 6th July and finishes after the Final Service on Saturday 11th July at approximately midday.

Location/Transport:
The school is being held at St Matthew’s Collegiate, Masterton. Those wishing to make their own way should arrive no later than 3pm to register. Singers travelling from Wellington may wish to catch the train which leaves Wellington Railway Station at 12.55pm. The cost for this is $6.50 for students, $12.00 for adults. Please let the Registrar know if you intend to catch this train as transport from Masterton Railway station will need to be arranged.

Cost:
The cost for this year’s school is $390 per student. Those who register and pay in full before 1 June 2009 will receive a $25 “early bird” discount, which will reduce the fee to $365. This includes all meals and accommodation, staff transport costs, music hire, venue costs and photocopying. We do our best to keep costs to a minimum, but there may be financial assistance available, just let the Registrar know. Your parish or school may also be able to assist with costs/fundraising. Busking, for example, is a very lucrative way of raising funds. Why not get a group together? Payment can be made directly to the Choir School bank account.
